George worked in the family business as an undertaker. George Dowden, his great grandfather was Ipswich’s first recorded cabinet maker. He advertised his business as a cabinet maker, upholsterer and undertaker in Brisbane Street, from the late 1850s. At this time it was common practice to combine businesses such as cabinet maker and undertaker to ensure a steady supply of trade.
