Alfred Delves Broughton (1826-1895)
Alfred Delves Broughton (1826-1895) was a member of the West Moreton Assembly and attended the first Legislative Assembly of Queensland Parliament.
Broughton was born on the 20th of November 1826. His father was Sir Henry Delves Broughton, the eighth baronet of Eccleshall, Staffordshire and Doddington, Cheshire, and his mother was Mary Broughton (nee Pigott). He had an older brother, Sir Henry Delves Broughton, the ninth baronet.
Broughton arrived in Australia circa 1848. He was a member of Messrs. Fattorini and Broughton Auctioneers etc. firm and a Justice of the Peace.
In 1852, Broughton was appointed by the Governor-General to be a Magistrate of New South Wales.
On the 16th of March, 1858, Broughton married Clemence Broughton (nee Fattorini), the daughter of Dr Fattorini, at Port Macquarie. They had two sons and a daughter. Broughton's first son was born on the 27th of October 1859 in East Street, Ipswich. Broughton's first daughter was born on the 18th of December 1861 in Drayton. Broughton's second son was Ernest Clement Vernon Broughton (1865-1901), born in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane.
In 1860, he was a captain of the Ipswich Mounted Infantry, and one of the first volunteer officers.
Also in 1860, Broughton attended the first Legislative Assembly of Queensland Parliament and stood for election to the West Moreston Assembly. He was elected to his seat, which he held from the 3rd of May 1860 to the 21st of December 1860, when he resigned in order to retire from politics. Dr Henry Challinor was elected to Broughton's seat.
In 1861, Broughton was appointed as the first Police Magistrate for Drayton, Toowoomba, and Dalby.
Broughton died in 1895.
