The line between Ipswich and Sherwood through Ebbw Vale was opened on 5 October 1874. It is thought that the passenger station building dates from c.1900 period.

Footbridges were built to a standard design during most of the 20th century. The date of construction of the footbridge at Ebbw Vale Station is unknown.

The platform shelter on the Ebbw Vale Station is of a 1930s style, possibly prefabricated. This type of shelter construction appears to exist only on the Ipswich Line with other surviving examples at nearby stations - notably East Ipswich and Bundamba.
