Peter was a time expired convict. The family oral history says that Peter arrived in Queensland with the Leslie Brothers. The family have not found any records to prove this claim but dates and numerous circumstances point to the fact that he may have arrived with one of the early Downs settlers.

Peter and his wife lived at One Mile and at Seven Mile. He was a farmer and carrier.

An advertisement for the sale of a team of bullocks in the Queensland Times on 15 January 1880 showed that Peter lived at Paradise (near Rosewood Gate), Ipswich.

There is a Hallam Lane officially signposted outside Rosewood in the vicinity of the land that Peter Hallam owned.

Peter was a grazier of Alice Downs Station at Blackall, Queensland.
