The Quarterly list in prisons and on hulks in 1849 includes Richard Austin who was 21 years old.

Richard married Mary Ann Prendergast (Pendergast) in Ipswich on 25 March 1856, his occupation at the time of their marriage was sawyer and carrier. Richard and Mary's son Richard was born on 29 September 1859.

In September of 1856, Richard appeared in Court on the charge of stealing jewellery from John Parkes store in Ipswich. John Parkes accompanied Chief Constable Quinn to the Red Cow Inn where Richard and Mary Ann's room was searched and some of the missing jewellery was found. Richard contended that he purchased the jewellery at the Red Cow Inn from a man named Joseph and was able to supply the name of witnesses. Richard was found guilty of receiving stolen goods.
