Rosewood State School
In 1870 John Vance, the station master at Rosewood Gate, approached the Board of Education calling for a school for the 41 children, aged 5-15, who were living in the Rosewood area. With no school forthcoming, Walter Hoare opened a school in O’Briens Sunrise Hotel, in 1872.
The following year, Vance opened his own private school near the station. By 1875, the parents and citizens of the township had raised enough money to begin construction of the first dedicated school building, a small timber structure with a shingle roof. Dan Desbois was appointed as the first teacher.
Rosewood State High School, was initially located within the grounds of the primary school and known as the Rosewood Secondary Department from 1962. Until its relocation to Rosewood Laidley Road, students would cross the overbridge at the Railway Station to attend some classes in the building that had previously been occupied by the Slipper Factory. The new standalone Rosewood State High School was opened in 1980.
