Description
DescriptionView of Brisbane Street looking west towards Ellenborough Street. Nicholas Street is to the right of image. In the foreground on the left is the Blackall Monument. Governor Blackall was the second Governor of Queensland from 1868-1871. Originally a drinking fountain when it was built in 1879, it was moved to the corner of Outridge Street and Chlemsford Avenue, Denmark Hill, in 1927 when traffic became too busy around Nicholas and Brisbane Streets. Next to the memorial is the gate post and fence of St Paul’s (originally built 1855-1859). The corner of the Queensland Times building (constructed in 1888) can be seen behind the trees. Ipswich Grammar School can be seen in the distance. On the northern side of Brisbane Street is Goleby’s, as saddle and harness maker (built 1881), smaller timber shops including Thomas Baines Auctioneer. The group of brick buildings includes the North Star Hotel on the corner (built in the 1850s and demolished 1986) and businesses including Miss Hunter, dressmaker; Richey and Co Commercial House; W. Tatham Book Seller and Stationer, and John Hunter’s Boot Palace. John Hunter had stores in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Maryborough, Bundaberg and in and around Sydney. He moved to this location on the corner of Brisbane and Nicholas Streets in 1894, after previously being in Nicholas Street. Hunter’s Corner was reputedly a meeting place for young couples, the Commonwealth Bank building was built on this site in 1930 (see Queensland Times, 26th July, 1930). This image appeared in the 1899 publication ‘The People, Products, and Industries of West Moreton, Queensland’. With many photos by Benjamin Taylor, copies of the book, printed by the Queensland Times and distributed by the Queensland Government, was sent to England to be distributed by the Immigration Lecturer at the Greater Britain Exhibition
