Ipswich Immigration Centre, historical newspaper articles
The Government Immigration Depot was located on land that today is the North Ipswich Reserve, located between the Bremer River and The Terrace at North Ipswich.
A Panorama of Ipswich from Limestone Hill taken by Poochee in 1865 is the only known image that shows the immigration depot which was a very important site in Ipswich from 1864 to approximately 1902. Many new immigrants bound for work in Ipswich and outlying areas were transferred from Brisbane to the Government Depot at North Ipswich where they stayed until they could find employment or could find housing with relatives or friends.
This collection of newspaper articles is by no means exhaustive. If your ancestors were at the Immigration Depot at North Ipswich and you would like to learn more you may want to search for additional newspaper articles on Trove.
