DescriptionBorn at Lincolnshire England, Joseph Broughton (1835-1909) was an agricultural labourer when he immigrated at Moreton Bay in 1871 with his wife Mary and their children, another was born in Queensland. The Broughtons lived first at Coalfalls in Ipswich, then later at the corner of Cribb and Burnett Streets. Joseph and Mary died at Ipswich within eight months of each other in 1909, by which time their children had become well established in the Ipswich and Brisbane communities.
Their eldest daughter Mary Ann had married William Kippen, a part owner of the Queensland Times and eventually the Chairman of the Board. Eldest son John (“JJ”) had married Eliza Elizabeth Wyman and owned a successful coach building business in Nicholas St Ipswich. Another son Thomas worked with JJ for many years before starting his own business. Sons George and Samuel established families and careers in Brisbane. Youngest daughter Emma married and raised a family at 30 Burnett Street, next to her parents’ estate and across the road from the West End Methodist Church Sunday School, in which the Broughton family was actively involved. Joseph Broughton’s estate included the auction and sale in 1910 of 2 homes and 2 vacant allotments at the corner of Cribb & Burnett Streets. The solicitor handling the estate bought 1 Cribb St and 2 Cribb St was bought by a teacher at the school across the street.
At the time of his death JJ Broughton (1862-1938) had 2 surviving sons and 3 daughters, his wife Eliza (nee Wyman) had predeceased him in 1932. While he had been retired some 18 years, he had been actively involved in managing several residential and commercial properties he owned in Ipswich and Southport, and was also a money lender to many residents in Ipswich. His estate accounts show that it continued to produce an income for its beneficiaries for over 20 years before it was finalised. Properties mentioned in his estate were homes located at 18, 19 and 20 Burnett Street Sadliers Crossing, the coach works at the corner of Nicholas and Limestone Streets, and “Beach Villa” on Marine Parade, Southport.References (online)Estate Auction and results
