Dalton Brothers General Grocers
Dalton Brothers General Grocers commenced trading on 31 May 1907 In Nicholas Street at the intersection of Union Street. This location was opposite T. C. Beirne's, and close to the railway station. These premises had previously been the site of Messrs. Ginn & Hooper. The building had been recently fitted by H. Woodford, and was owned by G. R. Wilson. J. B. Colthup was also a tenant in this building.
The brothers were D. R. Dalton formerly of Reid & Dalton (local grocers), and James William Dalton formerly employed in Cribb & Foote's grocery department.
Dalton Bros. sold crockery, household ironmongery, glassware, produce, and local, English and continental foodstuffs. They made deliveries by horse & cart.
In 1910 D. R. Dalton left the business and James continued to trade under the name of Dalton Brothers. The business appears to have thrived and in 1920 they opened a branch store in Chelmer. However Dalton Brothers ceased trading on Saturday 10 May 1930, possibly due to James's retirement. At this time their address appears as Brisbane Street.
The property on the corner of Nicholas and Union Streets and site of Dalton Brothers was previously occupied by T. W. Brady & Co. (grocers). It was also the location of the first primary school in Ipswich, later called Boys Central State School, which opened in June 1861. Additionally this school had been built on the site of an old bowling alley.
Malcolm McLean's butcher shop and Whitehouse's Cafe were neighbouring business establishments.
