DescriptionAlmost a century ago Merton was described as 'A gentleman's residence of fine proportions'. The land was first purchased by Pollet Cardew in 1854 and the entrance was from Chermside Road. It was later sold to Ebenezer Hargreaves in 1864. Hargreaves, a hardware store proprietor, Ipswich councillor from 1872 to 1882, and lay preacher, is believed to have built the house, although the date of construction is not known. Some of the property's land was resumed in 1871 for the Brisbane-Ipswich railway.
