DescriptionRivers were the best way to transport goods to Brisbane. Rivers provided a smooth & easy trip to Brisbane, compared to the Roads, often at that time, were bumpy & became impassable in wet weather. Flat bottomed barges had 2 chained hulls ideal for shallow bodies of water, & more stable in calm water By 1845 Barges were transporting freight between Brisbane. Limestone & coal, resources that could be traded. Coal being converted to Power. A successful mine operated on the North side of the Bremer East of Tivoli Creek. Coal was loaded into wagons underground, brought to the surface, hauled along the Tramway & tipped directly into Barges for transport to Brisbane. Barges were owned by the Riverside Coal Transport Company which carried coal to Powerhouses in Brisbane & later to the export facilities at the Port of Brisbane. In later years coal was transported from Tivoli, carrying 400 000 tons a year in the late 1960’s & 200 000 tonnes in the late 1980’s. Barging ended in April 1998.
