Ipswich Heritage Committees

A key component of the Heritage Program is the involvement of key stakeholders and community support. This was achieved with the establishment of the Ipswich Heritage Advisory Committee (later the Heritage Consultative Committee) in 1991. The make-up of the committee was intentionally broad-based in order to facilitate a balanced view of heritage protection and overall community input and representation.

The Ipswich Heritage Consultative Committee played an important role as the steering committee for the Ipswich Heritage Study and was a crucial sounding board for a wide range of heritage activities. In 2018, the Heritage Consultative Committee and the Monuments & Memorials Committee were amalgamated to form the Ipswich Heritage and Monuments Advisory Committee.

In Council election years, the Heritage Consultative Committee was dissolved and reinstated post-election with organisations and individuals previously represented on the committee were invited to review their representation and renominate. In addition a wider invitation was issued for nomination on the committee through placement of a public notice.

The last meeting of the Heritage and Monuments Advisory Committee was held in 2019. Post-election Council reviewed the community engagement strategy and the previous groups and committees with community representation. Former members of the Ipswich Heritage and Monuments Advisory Committee were invited to attend a Heritage Update meeting in May 2022. Attendees were provided updates on heritage projects and issues and the group discussed the formation of a reference group which resulted in the establishment of the Ipswich Heritage Network Group. The first meeting of the Ipswich Heritage Network Group was held on Monday, 1 August 2022 at 1 Nicholas Street.
