David Francis Underwood (1951- )

David Francis Underwood was born in June 1951 in Pittsworth, Queensland.

• November 1977, David Underwood, a member of the Australian Labor Party, was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the electorate of Ipswich West.
• December 1989, he did not contest his seat and Don Livingstone was elected to replace him.
• 1991 elected Mayor of Ipswich City Council. As was policy since 1931, the position of mayor had a three year term.
• 1994 reelected as mayor after his first term.

In 1995, Moreton Shire Council and Ipswich City Council were amalgamated under new policy from the Goss government. The two councils merged into a new council for Ipswich and an election for position of mayor over the new amalgamated council was held. John Nugent, previously mayor of the Moreton Shire Council before the amalgamation, defeated David Underwood in the mayoral election. The result was that David Underwood served a three year term and then a one year term, the first mayor to serve a one year term since Allan Godfrey Sutton, who served from 1938-1939.
