In an article about the Mayor's Allowance in the Queensland Times it was noted that if the Mayor chose to wear a robe and mayoral chain that he should be recompensed to that extent.

The Mayor stated that he had no desire to wear a robe, but to uphold the dignity of the position he thought- that should be done. His predecessors had not done so, but the war was on during that period, and he admired them for not having done so. Now that the war was over, he thought the custom should be again inaugurated.
