Hugh Reilly
Since Ipswich was proclaimed a city in 1904 it has been customary for the Mayor to wear an official robe. Subscriptions raised funds for the first Mayoral Robe which was presented to Alderman Hugh Reilly on 29 December 1904.
References (online)The Mayoral RobesThe Mayoral Robes. When the town of Ipswich was raised to the dignity of a city it was thought by some of the aldermen and leading citizens that the Right Worshipful the Mayor (Alderman H. Reilly) should be officially presented with the civic robes of office. The matter was heartily taken up, and we understand that subscriptions sufficient to cover the necessary expenditure were practically obtained in a few hours. The robes wore procured, and will be presented to the mayor in the Town Hall on Tuesday night next, at 7.30 o'clock. prior to the commencement of the ordinary meeting of the Council. The senior member for the town (the Hon. J. W. Blair, Attorney General) will make the presentation. Citizens are cordially invited to be present.
