Description

DescriptionThe hose tower in the background. Ipswich Fire Brigade was established in 1865. Although there are no definite records of the beginning of activities except that in July 1865 the brigade was activated when a fire destroyed the old timber building of Cribb & Foote in Bell Street. Before that time the first cart travelling to the scene would receive a fee. The first motor fire vehicle replaced the horse drawn fire vehicle in 1908. (A fire station building was erected in Brisbane Street between 1918-1920 and demolished in the early 1960s).
