Description
DescriptionSt Stephen's on the corner of Limestone and Gordon Streets. The National School is in front of St Stephens. The school was situated on one acre on the eastern side of Gordon Street, between Limestone and Brisbane Streets. Additional information: The worst flooding experienced in Ipswich on record occurred in February 1893 as three cyclones crossed the coast of South East Queensland and moved inland. The Brisbane River flooded three times on the 3rd, 13th and 17th of February. This photo looks towards St Stephens Church, on the corner of Limestone and Gordon Streets. The second Congregational Church (erected 1871) is visible on the southern side of Brisbane Street, opposite Wharf Street with its bell tower. A building to the left of the image appears to be removed from its footings and is floating on its side. There are several row boats being used to convey onlookers. (Originally attributed to the great flood of 1893, it is possible that this image might have been taken during the Ipswich floods of 1898, as the photographer, Benjamin Taylor is thought to have recorded both flooding events).
