Description
DescriptionBorn at Ipswich in 1857, "Eliza Elizabeth" was the youngest child of Thomas and Sarah Wyman, a couple in their mid-30s who had emigrated from Braughing, Hertfordshire in England the previous year with her 5 siblings aged 12 months to 12 years, and 2 of Thomas' nephews aged 19 and 20 years. Her twin died at birth. Her immediate family settled in Ipswich and her cousins in Tenterfield. When Eliza was only 2 years old her father died tragically after falling from a horse at Seven Mile Creek. Thomas was a sawyer who worked with a group of local men cutting timber in a 100-mile radius of Brisbane for use in the early colony. With the family breadwinner deceased, the Methodist Church community at Ipswich helped support the family for many years. Eliza went on to devote most of her life to church work in connection with the Ellenborough Street Methodist Church. In 1886 Eliza married John Joseph Broughton, a young English immigrant and widower, at the Syntax Street house of her mother Sarah Wyman “according to the rites of the Wesleyan Church”. Two years earlier, ”JJ” and his business partner FW Johnson had established Ipswich’s a prominent Ipswich coach building business. The Broughtons lived at Challinor St for many years then as the coachbuilding business flourished they lived c1905-1934 at “Rosemont” 19 Burnett St Ipswich. They had 3 daughters and 3 sons. Many relatives from the Broughton and Wyman extended families lived in the immediate area and Eliza was an avid collector and curator of photographs of family and friends. Eliza and JJ took regular seaside holidays at Southport on the Gold Coast, and owned a holiday home there, as did JJ’s brother-in-law William Kippen. Eliza died at Ipswich in 1932 and was buried at the Ipswich General Cemetery. References (offline)(Queensland) Marriage 1886/C/713
