DescriptionIda and Arthur Broughton were the third and fourth children of Ipswich coach maker John Joseph “JJ” Broughton and his second wife Eliza Elizabeth Broughton (nee Wyman). The Broughtons lived at Challinor St for many years then as JJ Broughton’s coachbuilding business flourished they lived c1905-1934 at “Rosemont” 19 Burnett St Ipswich. Ida married Wallace Richard Bell in 1917, they had 1 daughter and lived at “Palmyra” on Rowland Terrace Coalfalls.

In 1916 Arthur enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) or army, serving in world war 1 until 1918, becoming Lance Corporal 4th Machine Gun Battalion. From 1921-1947 he co-owned the Ipswich Coach and Motorworks, at the corner of Nicholas and Limestone Streets, the site initially established in 1890 by their father JJ and his partner FW Johnson. In 1922 Arthur married Esther May Hughes, the sister of another returned AIF officer. They lived initially at Ferrett Street West Ipswich, then at Corinda in Brisbane.
