DescriptionMourning cards or funeral cards were a part of Victorian-era rituals around death, particularly among the upper classes of society from the time Queen Victoria’s husband Alfred died in 1861. They were sometimes sent out after the funeral had happened, to be kept as a memento of the person who had died. Sarah Wyman lived at Syntax Street and was 77 years of age when she died while on holiday at Southport with members of her family. She was buried at the Ipswich General Cemetery, however her funeral does not appear to have been advertised in the local Ipswich or Brisbane newspapers as was the prevailing custom of the time. From first arriving in Ipswich in 1856 Sarah was an active member of the Methodist Church community at Ipswich. The Church helped support her young family for many years after her husband Thomas died in 1859. Her 3 sons and 3 daughters grew up to become successful and active members of the Ipswich community and surrounds.
