Description
DescriptionOn 11 January 1886, John Joseph Broughton (1862-1938) and his brother-in-law William Kippen (1851-1940) bought adjoining blocks of land on the Southport Esplanade at the auction for land parcels at the new Railway Station Estate (later Marine Parade). The 1903 Electoral Roll records for the Southport sub-division of Albert Division, show that Broughton had freehold ownership of subdivision 1 of sub-allotment 5, section 4, Parish Nerang and Kippen owned subdivision 2. Over the next decade they were busy with their careers, families and community commitments at Ipswich. Broughton owned a successful coach works and Kippen was a proprietor of the Queensland Times newspaper and Chairman of its Board. During this time the families took regular holidays at Southport, staying in rented homes. It was not until c1912-13 that Broughton and Kippen built holiday homes on their land parcels. Both homes were likely designed by Ipswich architect Henry Wyman, an elder brother of JJ’s wife Eliza. Henry Wyman had also designed Broughton’s coachworks (1890) at the corner of Nicholas and Limestone Streets, Kippen’s Ipswich home “Aberfeldy” (1878), and the West End Methodist Sunday School (1901) on Burnett Street, of which Broughton was a Trustee.
“Beach Villa” was built c1912 as Broughton’s holiday home and retirement residence from 1914. While he still had business interests in Ipswich, he was active in the Southport community, particularly with the Southport Bowls Club. After his death in 1938 Beach Villa remained in the Broughton / Andrews family until the 1970s.
Kippen built his family holiday home “Lorna Doone” around the same time and his electoral enrolment changed to this address from 31 Jan 1914. He sold or rented the property c1926 to Mr & Mrs Frank Reimers when he returned to Ipswich.
