Description
DescriptionIpswich Coach Works was established in 1884 by Frederick William Johnson and John Joseph Broughton, at the south-west corner of Limestone & Ellenborough Streets. As Ipswich’s population and prosperity rapidly increased, the business quickly faced pressure to expand. In 1890 the business relocated to a much larger newly built premises at the site of Dr Challinor’s former residence, corner of Nicholas and Limestone Streets. The site cost 800 pounds and the architect was Broughton’s brother-in-law Henry Wyman. In 1897 the partnership was mutually dissolved, Johnson sold his interest to Broughton and commenced the "City Coach Works" in Brisbane Street. On Broughton’s retirement in 1914 he leased the coachworks premises to William Haigh until 1921, when he extensively renovated the property and re-established the Broughton coach & motor works business, which was then operated by his sons Arthur and Harold.
