Description
DescriptionQueens Park is one of the oldest in Queensland. In 1863 the first trees and shrubs were planted, and a secure fence was installed.
The band rotunda was built in 1891, with the council taking over management of the park in 1893. The original location of the rotunda is unknown? and since its conception it was moved around the park a few times before being positioned in its final spot as the entrance to Ipswich Nature Centre which was established c.1910's. Bands playing in the park were a popular local attraction with many people gathering on Saturday afternoons and/or moonlit nights with people sitting on the surrounding grass. By 1914 motorcars were becoming more popular and conductors began complaining of the ongoing noise disrupting recitals.
The Ipswich City Vice Regal Band had won numeracy national competitions in the first half of the 20th century, considered the municipal band of Ipswich and was allocated more days to perform than others.
Redevelopment of the Nature Centre commenced in 1995.
