Description
DescriptionMen in a boat beside the Bank of New South Wales. The worst flooding experienced in Ipswich on record, occurred in February 1893 as three cyclones crossed the coast of South East Queensland and moved inland. The Bremer River flooded three times on the 3rd, 13th and 17th of February. (see Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au/hydro/fllod/qld/fld_history/brisbane_history.shtml accessed 14 March 2011). The Bank of New South Wales was opened in 1853 on the corner of East and Union Streets. The bank moved to this location, on the corner of Brisbane and East Streets, in 1863 (now the location of the telephone exchange). The Congregational Church (Brisbane Street) and St Stephens Presbyterian Church (Gordon Street) can be seen in the background, where the emulsion is damaged.
