DescriptionMartin William (Will) Haenke was born in 1875, on the family farm at Marburg. His father, Johann (1842-1900), had come from Morasko, Poland, and arrived in Queensland as a young man. Johann was a blacksmith by trade, but took up farming, settling amongst the German farming community at Marburg, before later moving to Ipswich, establishing himself as a fruiter. He had married Fredericke Muller (1848-1934) in 1869, and his early death left her a widow with eight children.

Following primary school, Will had begun an architecture apprenticeship with Ipswich architect Henry E. Wyman. He completed his training in Melbourne with the firm Lloyd Taylor and Fits, Architects and Engineers, along with his brother Martin.

Following the death of his father, he returned to Ipswich, setting up his own architectural firm. Supporting the education of his three younger brothers (another brother, Harry, supported their mother and two sisters).

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, brother Martin moved to California to practice architecture there, sending back magazines featuring the latest American housing designs to Will. Will successfully introduced and adapted the California Bungalow to Ipswich.

He also entered a side career, becoming a partner in the Rhondda Collieries (which his son Willis would later become Chairman of Directors) in 1903.

With the need to support his family following their father’s death, Will had a long courtship and engagement with Laura (Doll) Haenke, the daughter of Ipswich photographers Benjamin and Laura Taylor. They eventually were able to marry in 1908, living in Nicholas Street, where their two children were born. The family moved to Rockton in 1918, where his granddaughter still lives a century on.

Will’s hobbies included woodcarving, model making, inventing, and music.

This image is part of the Benjamin and Laura Taylor / I.X.L. Studio collection. Based in Ipswich, Benjamin Taylor is known to have traveled extensively throughout Queensland, with his camera. It is thought that Laura Taylor took these images of Will prior to their marriage.References (offline)R. L.
