DescriptionConstruction of the oldest part of Rockton commenced in late 1855, early 1856, as the family home of William Craies. Craies migrated to Australia from Scotland, and found work managing the Brisbane branch of the Bank of New South Wales, opening the Ipswich branch in 1853. On leaving the bank, he entered a partnership with Walter Gray & Co. in Ipswich, purchasing the land Rockton is situated on, and constructing its first stage: a three-roomed cottage with verandahs at front and rear and a detached kitchen, using English bond style brickwork. This first stage is now the south western wing of the house. The building was extended in late 1856, adding the main single storey wing and breezeway, with work undertaken by builder William Hancock. In 1862, the house was purchased for £3,000 by Robert Towns, of Sydney. The house was rented for several years, before being purchased, in 1873, by Samuel Hodgson, a founder of the Ipswich Woollen Mills, for £700. E.A. Bullmore purchased the property in 1882, adding the second storey, enclosing the breezeway to form a ballroom and installing a private pipeline to access town water. The tower was added around 1896, designed by architect George Brockwell Gill. In 1918, the house was purchased by architect Martin William Haenke, and his Wife Laura (nee Taylor).
