Description

DescriptionMartin William (Will) Haenke designed a bungalow cottage at Margate, Redcliffe, for his fiancé Laura Lydia Taylor on the 3rd of February 1906. It is thought that they became engaged in the late 1890s, prior to Will’s move to Melbourne to complete his architectural studies. On Will’s return to Ipswich, in 1900, his father’s sudden death, and the need to support his mother and younger siblings, as well as the establishment of his architectural practice, meant that the wedding was delayed until the 3rd August 1908. The wedding was held at Laura’s family home, in Roderick Street, and was presided over by the Reverend Thomas Warham. Haenke would design a second seaside bungalow for his wife in 1923, this one located at Southport. This image is part of the Benjamin and Laura Taylor / I.X.L. Studio collection. Based in Ipswich, Benjamin Taylor is known to have travelled extensively throughout Queensland, with his camera.
