Rosewood Hotel

The first Rosewood Hotel was granted a license to sell liquor in 1879. Walter Gosling held the license. 

The current Rosewood Hotel in John Street, Rosewood, was built after a fire in 1914 destroyed the first Rosewood Hotel on this site. Another eight premises in the business area of Rosewood were destroyed in the fire including the Royal Bank, F.B. Tomlin chemist shop, Pender & Hall auctioneers, Mrs Hohnke's fruit shop, A. Fites confectionery and green grocer. At the time of the fire, Mrs E. M. Ruhno owned the hotel, and Henry Jacob Wendt was licensee. Mrs Ruhno was the first to start rebuilding securing tenders for construction by the end of February and ensuring that the building was underway by the end of the year.

C. Ridsdale won the contract to build a new 2-storey hotel with verandahs. 

This pub was often referred to as "the middle pub" due to there being three pubs in Rosewood. 

Over the years, the historic hotel has been a set location for several movies such as 500 Miles, The Tree, and The Eddie Mabo Story. Additionally, a Ben Lee music video and several Castlemaine XXXX ads have been shot there. 

Carol Moore and David Pahlke owned the hotel from January 2004 to mid 2022. The bar closed around the end of 2014; however accommodation has remained available since 2015.

Luke and Lynette Chalmers were keen to renovate the hotel after it had been on the market for some years. Work started in April 2022 to restore the building. It reopened on 30 June 2023. There are eleven bedrooms upstairs with a bar, entertainment space and kitchen on ground level. The Chalmers had previously assisted in restoring the Mihi Tavern, Ipswich, and the Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane.

They kept the layout to retain the charm of the Rosewood Hotel but added bifold doors to lure customers to the large timber deck, beer garden and play area for children at the rear of the building. During renovations, they found that the hotel had its foundations secured by a large log running from the front to the rear of the hotel. Its condition was remarkably good, and engineers believed it would last another 200 years.
