Description
DescriptionThe Brandy Gully bridge is located just south of the railway, about 2.5kms west of Rosewood and 1km east of the Lanefield Crossing.
The bridge built in 1861, just two years after Separation linked Ipswich to Toowoomba. It was the colony's first, and at that time, the only, "main road'. This road maintained its place as Queensland's main road until well into the twentieth century.
The bridge fell into such a state of dilapidation after the First World War that it was dismantled and re-erected by the then Rosewood Shire Council in 1922. Given the short time frame (July-August) that it took to rebuild the bridge it is probable that the structural girders and piles were used in the new structure. One old timer remembers the old bridge and said that the 1922 structure was identical to the original.
Folklore abounds. Brandy Gully is said to be named after an incident whereby a crate of brandy fell from a wagon crossing the bridge. The teamster managed to conceal the crate in the vicinity of the bridge and divulged the hiding place to only his most trusted colleagues.
