Arthur Bennett embarked for overseas service in October 1916, on the HMAT Boonah, as a Regimental Sergeant Major in the 4th Pioneer Battalion. He was gassed, and wounded in Ypres, in 1917, and spent time in hospitals in the United Kingdom. He returned to Australia in July 1918. After the war he returned to working for Queensland Railways, finishing his working life as Foreman of the Westinghouse Brake Shop at the Railway Workshops, Ipswich, in 1961.
