It was built by Worley and Whitehead for $2000 for Thomas Hancock Junior and second wife, Louise. The prominent Hancock family were timber merchants. Meiringen at 59 Chermside Road was built around 1914 for Rex Cribb and his wife. It was sold in 1924 to Richard Watson when the family moved to Elemang. The home at 61 Chermside Road still maintained much of the original form of the house at the time of this Study. Karragaroo at 8 Karragaroo Street was built for Ambrose Foote, son of John Foote, a partner in Cribb and Foote. He moved into the house in 1884. It was sold to F. A. Whitehead, a local photographer in 1919. No 34 Whitehill Road at the time of the Study had been in the Smith family since 1928. ˜Frampton Villa™, at No. 48 Whitehill Road, was built around 1891 by James Foote as a place to stay whilst his two storey ‘Bleak House’ was being built nearby. It sits close to the corner of Rose Street. The land at 54 Whitehill Road was bought from Harry Smart Cribb, by, John P North who was born in ˜Notnel" and built this house in 1907. The family lived there until the 1920s. Garowie at 59 Whitehill Road, was designed by Ipswich builder and architect Samuel Shenton and built by Mesrs Robert. Wilson and Co. for James Clarke Cribb (son of Benjamin Cribb). At one time the grounds included a private lawn, bowls green and tennis court. 63 Whitehill Road was once part of the Cribb estate at Garowie. It was built in 1914 for Hilde Cribb after her marriage to William Ernest Hargreaves, an Ipswich solicitor.References (offline)˜Ipswich City Council 'Heritage Study, 1992'.
