Description
DescriptionInformation on the history of the flood gauges was provided by the Bureau of Meteorology.
There were several flood gauges in the Goodna area used to monitor flood levels of the Brisbane River.
Many railway stations had this type of indicator to enable early flood warning to stop the services in the sections ahead.
This type of flood gauge was used to indicate the water levels of rivers and creeks. The gauge used the old Fleet system and has the number 50 at the bottom of the numbers 1, 2, 3 on upward i.e. 50 feet and upward which is approximately equivalent to 16m AHD and upward these days.
The system was changed from feet to meters ca.1975.
Gauges were installed in Goodna in 1895 and in 1960 and some gauges were relocated within Goodna in 1969 to a site 0.4km downstream near the former Wolston Park Hospital. It is believed that the relocated gauges were washed away in the 1974 flood.
Members of Council's Heritage Advisory Committee inspected the flood gauge ca.2000. Viva Cribb, Ray Osborne and John Adams can be seen in the image.
