DescriptionPostwar conditions stressed the cramped railways workshops in North Ipswich, and in 1949 steps began to establish new workshops east of the woollen mill. Occupation of new buildings at Redbank began in 1958 but a further seven years passed before the railway foundry was operational.' Additional Information As part of the post war reconstruction program, in 1948 49 land was acquired for new workshops at Redbank. There being no room for expansion at North Ipswich. A new site allowed new workshops to be planned for modern requirements. The preliminary plans were completed in 1951 and fabricated steel work for the new bulk store ordered from England.

The workshops were a major project and initial work focussed on levelling and drainage on a huge scale; one third was completed by June 1953. Even then the workshops were estimated to cost 4.5 to 5 million pounds. Work began erecting steel for foundry and forge shop, machine and erecting shops in 1954 55. Priority was given to completing the stores building which was occupied on 28 May 1958 and to completing the erecting shop for occupation in July to help overcome the locomotive repair bottle neck. Work repairing diesel electric locomotives was transferred from Ipswich on 14 July 1958.
