DescriptionThe historical marker for Colthup House was installed on 22 June 2009.

Plaque Text:

The house was built for John Nichols and was sold in 1904 to Minnie Kathleen Foote. Minnie Foote was the wife of Harold John Foote who was a prominent Ipswich retailer. In 1913 the house was described as being on “one acre of land, with seven rooms, 2 bathrooms, servants' rooms, pantry, kitchen, a nice garden, and gas and water”. In 1918 the house passed to Mary Alice Colthup and was called 'Latrobe'. It remained in the Colthup family until 1958 when Miss Ivy Colthup vacated the house and it was purchased by the Baptist Church for the purpose of a Christian Home for the aged. The church amalgamated surrounding allotments to eventually take up the whole of the easterly end of the block bounded by Thorn, Roderick and South Streets. Extensions were added in 1963, 1966 and 1970. The nursing home was built in 1983 an d a hostel complex opened in 1993.
