Description
DescriptionPhotograph of historical marker for Buttonsville installed 5 March 2015.
Plaque Text: Built in 1884 for Joseph and Martha Reid.
Edward John Easton who became known as “the squire of Buttonsville”, purchased the property in 1893 for his bride. The property included several acres of land, and successful racing stables in Clifton Street. Buttonsville was named after Easton's horse, Buttons, who won the Queensland Cup in 1889.
Easton was active in other sporting and community groups, owned extensive areas of land in Booval, Redbank and Ascot, and became the Mayor of Ipswich in 1919. He built the National Hall (Cambrian Centre) in South Station Road, Booval in 1914. After Easton's death, a police sergeant, J. Holley, bought Buttonsville and the land was subdivided, and some rooms were removed from the rear of the building.
