When we moved to Booval in 1954 and the factory was operating on coal-fire steam, ashes were freely available to local residents from the fire box. They could take the ashes for their gardens or filling.

The Booval Butter factory also manufactured ice which the public was able to purchase. Each morning before work, I would visit the factory and collect ice for our ice chest. Eventually they ceased manufacturing ice so we had to buy a fridge.

Around this time, a railway siding ran from Booval station into the Butter Factory grounds and in the early morning you could hear the metal cream cans being unloaded.

Pasteurised milk was sold in round pint bottles with a waxed cardboard top about an inch and half in diameter. A milkman would deliver these bottles to our door and the bottles were subject to a deposit.

The Butter Factory also held morning teas for the public and we were able to sample products like cheese and ginger.

Thank you for your comments.

This information is very useful for enhancing our knowledge of how this business operated in earlier times.
