Cooneana Homestead
Cooneana is the name of the homestead located at 1041 Redbank Plains Road in New Chum built for Samuel Pearson Welsby c.1868. Samuel had arrived in Moreton Bay aboard the 'Fortitude' in 1849 and settled in the Ipswich area not longer after.
Samuel and his wife Elizabeth both died in 1884, Elizabeth on 15 February and Samuel on 11 November, they were both seventy-two years old. The property was left to their daughter Elizabeth Cameron who lived at Cooneana until approximately the late 1880s. Caretakers are believed to have lived on the property until Elizabeth returned after World War I with her daughter Claudia and Claudia's husband George Manson.
Samuel Welsby's great grandchildren lived at Cooneana in the 1960s and the property remained in the ownership of the family until it was subdivided in 1974 and sold to Rhonvale Pty Ltd.
