DescriptionReverse of photograph reads: 'This snap was taken somewhere in France by an amateur photographer. I think he was, anyhow, by the finishing touches he has put on, don’t you? But it is a souvenir and that’s what I wanted. [signed] Arthur 7.8.17'.

Arthur embarked for overseas in October 1916, on the HMAT Boonah as a Regimental Sergeant Major in the 4th Pioneer Battalion. The Battalion was involved with the construction, maintenance, and repair of military railways on the Western front. He was gassed and wounded in Ypres in 1917 and spent time in hospitals in the United Kingdom. He returned to Australia in July 1918.
