As he served in the Citizens’ Forces, Arthur embarked for overseas in October 1916, on the HMAT 'Boonah', as a regimental sergeant major in the 4th Pioneer Battalion. The Battalion was involved with the construction, maintenance and repair of military railways on the Western front. He was gassed, and wounded in Ypres in 1917, and spent time in hospitals in the United Kingdom. He returned to Australia in July 1918.
