The image is thought to have been taken when he was a 'pupil teacher' for the Queensland Education Department in the 1890s. The adult male on the right is unidentified but possibly a teacher. The school is unknown but is thought likely to be Ipswich Central Boys School.

Arthur was born in 1875, arriving in Ipswich from England in 1889 at 14 years of age. He did not remain teaching, he worked at his father’s firm, the City Joinery, located on Marsden Parade for a while and then serving as a cashier and accountant at Cribb & Foote for 23 years. He lived at 14 York Street, East Ipswich, with his family for several years until moving to Brisbane to open his own accountancy business in 1923.
