Description

DescriptionSoldiers on board ship Minniewaska from Sydney to Europe via Lemnos. From Ipswich, William served in Gallipoli, Egypt and France. He hurt his foot in Egypt and was later seriously wounded at the third battle at Ypres, in September 1917. He carried two pieces of shell from that encounter until his death in 1966. His family owned the Johnson Coach Works in Ipswich. Johnson was the Managing Director of 4IP radio station that was owned and operated by the Ipswich Broadcasting Company Pty. Ltd which opened in September 1935. The description on the back of the photograph reads: 'Enroute overseas, 1915.'
