Elizabeth Lloyd purchased the land in Quarry Street in 1863 and 'Devonshire Cottage' was constructed, possibly as an investment as Elizabeth only lived in the house for a very short time.
Reverend Mossop lived in the house in 1870 and it was sold in September 1873 to William Tamlyn who also purchased adjoining allotments. In 1882 James Alexander Jackes purchased the cottage and the house was named 'Toronto' after his birthplace.
