DescriptionMembers of the Methodist Athletic Club, preforming on the parallel bars, outside the Central Methodist Mission, corner of Ellenborough and Limestone Streets. Under the instruction of W. J. Rawlings, the Methodist Athletic Club were awarded best all round gymnasts at the inaugural Combined Gymnastics Display and Competition, held on the 4th November 1903, at the Town Hall. The overall winners were the St Paul’s Young Men’s Society. The competition was opened to local gymnasts with medals in various categories presented by Mayor Alderman W. H. Summerville MLA. W. J. Rawlings was presented with the Challenge Cup, a silver cup donated by Ambrose Foote. Clubs competing were St Paul’s Young Men’s Society, Catholic Young Men’s, The Methodist Athletic Club, Ipswich Grammar School, Ipswich Amateur Athletic, and Geisha. Entertainment was provided by the Ipswich State School Cadets who performed a physical drill with rifles to the accompaniment of martial music supplied by Master George England on the mouth organ. Miss Jose Bytheway and Mr W.H. Brookes sung for the audience. The first combined gymnastics display of its kind in Queensland, the competition was designed to be an annual event.
