Description

DescriptionThe worst flooding experienced in Ipswich on record occurred in February 1893 as three cyclones crossed the coast of South East Queensland and moved inland. The Bremer River flooded three times on the 3rd, 13th and 17th of February. The Bank of New South Wales was opened in 1853 on the corner of East and Union Streets. The bank moved to this location on the corner of Brisbane and East Streets in 1863 (now the location of the telephone exchange). (Originally attributed to the great flood of 1893, it is possible that this image might have been taken during the Ipswich floods of 1898, as the photographer, Benjamin Taylor, is thought to have recorded both flooding events)
