DescriptionCopy of original probably from Mathewson and Co. Brisbane image J. T. Waraker became the Reverend of the Congregational Church in Ipswich in August 1856, after moving from Maitland, NSW. He established a Sunday School and regular preaching service in Little Ipswich and Bremer Mills. Later the church purchased a horse and the Reverend would travel as far as Toowoomba and Warwick, preaching and setting up Sunday Schools. It was during Mr Waraker’s time that the use of musical accompaniment was introduced for the singing of hymns. The Reverend Waraker resigned in December, 1859, taking up a new position in Toowoomba. (Information taken from Central Congregational Church, Ipswich Qld.-one hundred years 1853-1953 compiled by Rev. J. Harold King, 1953:page four) At that time, there was much opposition to instrumental music in public worship. After serious deliberation, a compromise was made and consent given for instrumental music, provided that it should ‘assist and not supersede the Congregational psalmody.
