Description
DescriptionThe Powerhouse was built to supply electricity to the Railway Workshops. It officially opened in 1903. Additional Information The Power House at Ipswich was a large split level substantial masonry building housing an engine room of accumulation tower at a level 3 foot 6 inches above the level of the boiler room, ash tower and cooling tower. A smoke tunnel was positioned under and ran the length of the engine room to a chimney detached from the building. Similarly a coal tunnel was positioned under and runs the length of the boiler room. A verandah supported on cast iron columns provided protection over a set of tracks terminating at the ash tower. The building comprised 2 large gabled roofs over the main engine and boiler rooms. The ash tower was located adjacent to the end wall of the boiler room and was distinguished by its steeply pitched hipped roof.
The accumulation tower had a parapet steel framed main roof. There were two levels of windows the side wall of the engine room had semi circular arched windows beneath an upper level of segmented arch windows.
There were cast iron windows and galvanised iron louvres to the tower. There was flooring of cork linoleum on timber on concrete and roof ventilators to both ridges.
