DescriptionBorn in Harrisville in 1889, James went to Christian Brothers’ College in Ipswich. His father, Philip John Danaher, was the station master at Calvert. He enlisted in June 1915 and embarked overseas on HMAT Wandilla. He won his commission whilst on active service and died in battle at Polygon Wood, Belgium, 27 September 1917. The letter reads: “France, October 23, 1917. P J Danaher, Esq, Calvert via Rosewood, Australia. ‘Dear Mr Danaher, It is with the deepest regret that I write to offer you my heartfelt sympathy on the death of your son, Lieut. James Danaher, who was killed in the battle of Polygon Wood. His loss is one that is felt deeply in the Battalion. Lieut. Danaher went through the engagement up to the afternoon of the second day, September 27th. He was attached to the Headquarters Staff, carrying out his duties as Intelligence Officer, when he was killed by a shell in the vicinity of Headquarters. He was an efficient staff officer and his death is deeply regretted. Through the bravery of a fellow Officer and a party of men, Lieut. Danaher’s body was recovered and was laid to rest on the battle field. Again assuring you of my deep sympathy and appreciation of the loss you have just sustained. Believe me, Yours most sincerely ‘Fred W Toll, Lt Col’ Commanding 31st Bat. AIF”
