Location
Description
DescriptionThis property was Darby’s Fresh Bake bakery from around 2009 to around 2013. The business had many locations across Australia at the time and was owned by Victor De Vries.
In March 2013, ten Darby’s Fresh Bake bakeries closed permanently and were transferred to liquidators, leaving fifty Queenslanders unemployed. The locations of the closed stores were in Toowoomba, Dalby, Charlton, Gatton, Oakey, Churchill, Collingwood Park, Ebbw Vale, Yamanto, and North Ipswich. The location at 37 Warwick Road is thought to be one of the stores closed at this time.
Mr De Vries was quoted by the Brisbane Times as saying that the reason he had closed the ten locations was “tough times” and that “the decision [to shut down the business locations] was made fairly quickly. Last Year it was a profitable business, but since September [of 2012] it has gone quiet.” He went on to say “I think it is a reflection of the state of the economy.”
The original business at 37 Warwick Road is believed to have been a corner grocery store in the mid 20th century run under the name Lowe’s. Lowe’s sold lollies in glass bottles and delivered groceries to order.
After Lowe’s the businesses which are thought to have operated out of this location were:
• Moulin Rouge Restaurant
• Mad Hatters Restaurant
• Cafe Delish Deli and Café
More recently, the location hosted several businesses, including:
• c. 2007 - c. 2009 Dirty Dogs Restaurant
• c. 2010 - c. 2013 Darby’s Fresh Bake Bakery
• c. 2013 - c. 2015 Wild Poppy Café
• c. 2017 - c. 2019 – Arcadia Restaurant
• c. 2021 - Essence of Indya Restaurant
