McKenzie & Jackson

The business was originally established by G.H. Willson & Co. as a large general store. A. McKenzie & A. E. Jackson took over from Willson and the McKenzie and Jackson store existed from at least March 1922. When McKenzie retired,  H. E. McDermott became a partner.  A few years after that Jackson sold out and Alfred Rowland Walker joined the business as McDermott's partner however he retired around 1930. By  September 1930 H.E. McDermott was the sole proprietor of the business, still retaining the McKenzie & Jackson name, and performing extensive alterations on the building including  re-modelling the show windows and lighting system. The following year  J. Walker joins McDermott as joint proprietors. 

The store was located on the corner of East and Limestone Streets, Ipswich with store and warehouse at Goodna.

In earlier days the business was an ironmongery. They were distributors for Bergers Paints and also carried building supplies, household items including crockery, gardening and farming needs, and they sold Darra Cement.

Other businesses sharing space in the building include R.T. Edwards electrical appliances and Roberts Health Academy original health food specialists. Next to the building is Frank Hoare’s furniture shop at 60 East  Street.  The Wintergarden Theatre was a couple of doors up the hill. In 1931 an indoor miniature golf course opened next door. 

The business was trading in the same location to at least 1963.
